Soccer Goes Scoreless
Sept 18, 2007
Women
GWC was coming off of an important win against Irvine Valley on Friday and played at home against Riverside trying to make it two wins in a row. However, the offense couldn't find the net after many chances, and a 1st half goal for RCC held up for a 1-0 defeat for the Rustler Women.
Men
The Rustler Men have had a tough pre-season, coming close in many games so far, but not quite getting the desired results. For a young team playing such a tough schedule, they should take some consolation, but this team is determined and it showed in a gritty 0-0 tie against Rio Hondo, who came into the game at 9-1 as one of the top teams in the state. GWC played a man down for 70 minutes of the 90 played, and GK Brent Reis saved a Penalty Kick and finished with 8 saves, many of them of the fantastic variety, to keep the shutout and get a very important result for the team.
El Camino too much for the Rustlers
Sept 7, 2007
Women-
Golden West battled a tough El Camino, yet couldn't break through and fell 0-2 on Friday afternoon. The Women were coming off a tough loss earlier in the week, which saw them dominate the match but not the scoreboard. With tired legs, the team tried to keep up with El Camion's speedy forwards, and for the most part they did just that. But they failed to keep them out on two occasions which cost them the game. The Rustlers starts conference with last season's state runner up, Cypress , Tuesday, September 11 at home 6 PM .
Men-
The men's team is playing one of the toughest pre-season schedules in school’s history. They were turned down again with a 0-2 loss to El Camino and still unable to beat a top Southern Section team in the 2007 season. The game was very physical and produced very little chances on goal for either team. The Rustlers’ defense was very solid only allowing one shot on goal which was saved by Goalkeeper Brent Reis. However, two fouls were committed which resulted in penalties that were both converted by El Camino to give them the game.
The men next take on Long Beach at home on Tuesday, September 11 at 4:00 PM before a break in the schedule.
Men’s and Women’s Soccer can’t hang on in the final minutes
Sept 4, 2007
Both Men and Women struggle in closing minutes of the game verse San Diego City College .
Women Soccer:
Golden West College went down 0-2 at halftime, but kept the pressure up to even the score at 2-2 from goals by Riana Bakhos and Addison Roderick. Despite out shooting their opponents 23-5, they gave up a goal off of a corner kick with less than 10 minutes to play dropping their third consecutive game of the season.
Men’s Soccer:
GWC played a sluggish first half which saw them down 0-3 by the interval. Using a fresh line-up of substitutes energized the team and saw them claw back to even at 3-3. However, playing a man down the final 10 minutes took its toll and they gave up a goal in the final minute of extra time. Goals were scored by Dios Velasquez, Marvin Carvajal, and Richard Nulanz, all freshmen players. It was Nulanz's 3rd goal in 3 games.
Next Friday Golden West will host El Camino, Women play at 4:00pm and the Men start at 6:00pm .
