Short Term Courses

Courses within this program are for currently employed law enforcement personnel. Some of the courses in this program are P.O.S.T. mandated in-service Advanced Officer Training (AOT), or Continued Professional Training (CPT) and may be assignment specific or for general career growth.

Students in this program have the opportunity to:

Collectively the courses in these three programs validate the mission of the college. They not only provide educational opportunities for new college students but pre-service and in-service students alike. Meeting student needs for career placement, development and advancement.

In these programs the department performs a valuable service for the student as well as the community. Over the years, the Criminal Justice Training Center has maintained a reputation for excellence in instruction and in meeting the needs of its students as well as the Law Enforcement community, which make up its constituency.

GWC schedules AOT/CPT as per agencies’ needs. Some AOT/CPT classes are presented through Contract Education. Prices will vary depending on length of class. No college credits are given for Contract Ed classes.

Academy Instructor Certificate Course  (AICC)

POST: PLAN 5

Pre-requisite: This course is presented in conjunction with POST and there is no fee for the class. You must be a candidate for teaching in a POST Regular Basic Course.

The AICC course is intended to equip instructors with the skills, competencies and knowledge necessary to deliver training for recruits and peace officers in a manner that emphasizes the retention and application of knowledge consistent with the goals and mission of policing.  A primary goal of AICC is to comply with the requirements of the minimum standards for Regular Basic Course (RBC) instructors detailed in POST Regulations 1071, 1082, and 1083.

Orientation, Police Academy, Regular Basic Course

This course is designed to familiarize the student with the police academy training program and may be taken 4 times. Credit/no credit only. Not transferable, AA/AS degree only.

Police Academy - Regular Basic Course (RBC)
CJ G064                      23 units                       POST certified
Pre-requisites: Criminal Justice CJ G054AD (Orientation - Police Academy)
Co-requisites: Criminal Justice CJ G065 (Physical Fitness/Police Academy) see GWC Fall 2015 Schedule for information.  
This course provides the fundamentals of basic police training in compliance with the minimum standards established by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). The training includes community based policing concepts, techniques, and observation of application. Letter grade only. Not transferable, AA/AS degree only.

Civilian Supervisory Course

This course provides state mandated, formalized basic supervisory training for any "non-sworn" supervisor in a law enforcement agency or equivalent.

Communications Training Officer (CTO)    àProjected to be offered à Spring 2016

This course provides state mandated instruction in basic training skills applicable to the Communications Training Officer in a law enforcement agency or equivalent.

CPOA- Leadership Development for Law Enforcement
CJ G096          3 units                         80 Hours over 5 months 
This course provides leadership principles for career advancement in a law enforcement environment. Pre-requisite: P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate.

Public Safety Dispatcher Course (911 Operator)

Dispatch Supervisor Course  (Pre-requisite)*

* Pre-requisite: Participants must be currently employed as a Dispatch Supervisorin a professional dispatch environment
COST: $350**
This 80 ­hour P.O.S.T. certified Supervisor Course has been specifically        developed for the Public Safety Dispatch Supervisor. The course represents an             excellent foundation for          supervisors, regardless of length of service. It is presented in a facilitated discussion format which requires the active participation of all students.

Reserve Coordinator Course     à TBA

This course is designed to address contemporary training needs of law enforcement reserve coordinators by providing new techniques for managing reserve peace officer organizations. Sergeant Supervisory Course (SWORN)

Specialized Investigators’ Basic Course    September  2015

Attendance is by permission only.
Basic knowledge and skills in compliance with minimum standards to meet requirements established by the Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) for persons serving as Specialized Investigators in the State of California. Includes both physical and academic standards for successful completion.

SWAT - Special Weapons and Tactics (PRE-REQUISITE*)
Contract Education     No college credit        2 weeks          80 Hours         POST Certified

Attendance is by permission only.
There is also a mandatory Physical Fitness test conducted the first day of class. Email for pre-class information since there are restrictions and pre-requisites.

Concepts, planning, tactical operations, approach/entry/search techniques; use of chemical agents, weapons, rappelling and task-related physical activities.

*Pre-requisite:  a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate and assignment to an agency’s SWAT unit.
