Welcome
October 2009 Employee of the Month
She has a dual Canadian and United States citizenship but was born in Italy and speaks, reads and writes Italian – how cool is that? Coming to us from OCC, our October Employee of the Month Adele Dick is an absolute pleasure to meet and has been a part of the GWC campus for the past 4 years. You will find her smiling face at the Circulation Desk as you enter the Library, where she works the “front line” as a Library Assistant in the Reserve Collection/Public Services, making sure all those loaned books come back on time and get shelved properly, and helping in just about any way she can.
Adele loves working with students, and is especially proud of the Star Collection, funded by the Foundation and ASGWC, which allows for the purchase of current texts to be on hand for use in 2-hour periods of time. Adele enjoys working in the library with a wonderful team that seeks new ways to support students, staff and instructors.
With a BA in History and Political Science, Adele worked in the library on campus as a student in Canada, where she had lived since age 5. It was there she met her husband, and they now have two grown sons in their twenties. It doesn’t take long to realize this woman has a lot of energy! She currently Co-Chairs the District Reclassification Committee with Connie Marten, is on the Planning and Budget Committee, and is a CERT-qualified Building Marshall of half of the Library. You may have seen her walking on campus on her break time – that’s one of her interests, along with photography, travel and sewing. She says her goal is to walk a marathon, and she has already completed three “half-marathons”. You GO, girl!
It was said of Adele, “She has been the key library staff member to plan the library shelving and shelf shifting for the entire library. She created a library shelving map that is used all the time at the Reference Desk so that students and staff can easily locate library materials by location number and book stack number. Adele also is a very active and thoughtful contributor to the library arrangement and shelving needs for the new library building” working hard to make sure the new library will be efficient and user-friendly.
OCC’s loss is certainly our gain in Adele. CONGRATULATIONS to our October Employee of the Month!
Dear Committee Members,First, I’d like to thank all you for volunteering to be a Classified Representative on one of our campus committees. I believe it is important that Classified employees participate in shared governance since it can be an important part of keeping us all informed of what is going on at our campus.Anita Renninger and myself have made a Classified Connection website which we will use as one of the ways to share with your coworkers the information that each of you learn each meeting. I am asking that one Classified Representative on each committee email Anita or I a brief summary after each meeting so we may post it on the website.
Please take a minute to visit the Classified Connection website. If you find any incorrect information such as a committee not being listed or you are not included as one of the reps please let us know.
Thanks again,
Connie

Notes from Bookstore Taskforce Meeting on 09/01/09
Janet Houlihan called the meeting to order at 2:00 PM
Introductions
Overview of meetings that are scheduled:
- Contracting out the bookstore is already on the Academic Senate (September 8 at 1:00 PM)
- This will also go to ASGWC (September 8 at 3:00 PM)
- GWC planning teams joint meeting (September 9th at 11:00 AM)
- Planning and Budget Meeting is later in the afternoon (September 9 at 2:30 PM).
Houlihan emphasized that in the RFP the classified employees in the bookstore will remain college employees.
Houlihan mentioned that Jerry Patterson put a policy on the last Board agenda dealing with the District student bookstores. The policy was approved by the Board but has been sent out to the various constituency groups for input and further development.
GWC has received two responses from the RFP that met the requirements of the RFP—Follett and Barnes & Noble. There were four other proposals that came in but they did not meet all of the conditions of the RFP.
For the GWC Bookstore, the 2008/2009 year ended $156,000 in the red. The difference comes out of cash reserves, but the reserves are running low. At this rate of deficit spending, in one more year, the bookstore losses will have be made up from the general fund.
Steve indicated that the GWC Bookstore’s major competitor is the Web, particularly in the used book market.
Steve indicated that salaries and benefits represents 16-18% of the total expenses.
Also, some books are very expensive (in the $200 range).
Steve talked about using a rental process versus actually purchasing textbooks. He indicated that it is working in some colleges. But, it takes several hundred thousand dollars to set the program up.
Houlihan went through handout entitled “Tentative Operation Plans for 2009-2010.
- Custom books take 4-6 weeks lead time to get the books completed on time; it is also difficult to return them and get credit
- Houlihan talked about the 50% person that is currently working in the bookstore (i.e., Reggie)
- The bookstore is currently understaffed
- The bookstore currently has 18 different scantrons that is has to keep in stock for different faculty needs.
- The campus would probably have to come up with a minimum $150,000 to refurbish the bookstore. To do the upgrade properly, would probably cost $250,000.
- Would also need to make a lot of cultural changes on the campus to make the bookstore successful (NOTE: no specifics).
- Some faculty make up their own workbooks and have them printed on the outside.
Houlihan provided a handout that compares the proposals from Follett and Barnes & Noble.
Houlihan believes that Follett is the stronger proposal financially. The Follett proposal includes $300,000 income to GWC. Follett has produced some carpeting samples and layouts for renovating the bookstore. She indicated that Barnes & Noble has put together a similar package.
The taskforce unanimously approved a motion to take the Follett proposal to the GWC Planning & Budget meeting.
There was some discussion of who would determine where the bookstore income would go on the campus. Houlilan indicated that at this time the GWC Bookstore is run by the administration.
Ideally, GWC admin is hoping to get the bookstore RFP proposal on the September 30th Board of Trustees Agenda.
Respectfully submitted by
Neal Kelsey, Executive Director
Coast Federation of Classified Employees
