Assessment is the systematic collection of information about student learning, including activities and functions that support such learning, both directly and indirectly, and the use of that information to create a continuing cycle of improved teaching and learning at the Institutional, Program and Course Levels. (see Levels of Assessment Grid, below.) The primary assessment tools are Student Learning Outcomes, Process Objectives and Satisfaction Objectives.
eLumen is a program that “creates, continually improves, and makes available recommended structures and practices that faculty and staff can use to specify, document, and communicate both actual and potential student learning outcomes.” (from the eLumen website)
Institutional Effectiveness is the measure of our success as an educational operation. It is a systematic, continuous and documented comparison of institutional performance to institutional purpose at the Institutional, Program, and Course Levels. (adapted in part from the SASC IE Handbook.)
Process Objective is a statement describing a desired, measurable degree of efficiency or effectiveness of a specific process or activity, generally in a service area, assessed at the Course, Program and Institutional Levels. Objects of evaluation may include adherence to projected timetables; production, distribution, and utilization of products or services; and financial audits.
Program is a generic term for a specific set of institutional activities or functions considered as a unit for purposes of assessment. A particular activity or function may be part of more than one program, depending on the objective of the assessment. (See attachment “What is a Program?”)
Program Review is a periodic, detailed report on the historical development, current activities and performance, goals and needs of a specific program – qualitative, quantitative and financial — and a statement of how that program’s content and activities relate to the College Mission and Goals.
Satisfaction Objective is a statement describing a desired, measurable degree of user-satisfaction with a particular process, product or service, assessed at the Course, Program and Institutional Levels.
Strategic Planning is a disciplined effort to produce fundamental decisions and actions that shape and guide what an organization is, what it does, and why it does it. Strategic planning requires broad-scale information gathering, an exploration of alternatives, and an emphasis on the future implications of present decisions. It can facilitate communication and participation, accommodate divergent interests and values, and foster orderly decision-making and successful implementation. It involves creating an action plan based on clear end results and accurate assessment of current reality.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) are explicit statements describing knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes that a student will be able to demonstrate at the end (or as a result) of his or her engagement in a particular lesson, course, program, or collegiate experience. SLO’s are assessed at the Course, Program and Institutional levels.
5-Column Model (Nichols) is the standard template adopted by the campus for IE Assessment activities. It:
1) links the specific area mission to the campus mission,
2) establishes the objectives for accomplishing the area mission,
3) defines the means of assessment and the criteria for success in achieving the objectives,
4) documents the results of the assessment and
5) identifies how the results will be used.
