RE:                 Accreditation Status

As you may have heard, the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) met in early June to review and act upon the site team reports for those colleges that were visited this spring, which included Golden West College and the other colleges of the Coast Community College District.

Late Wednesday, the ACCJC announced its decisions from the June meeting.  Golden West College, along with Coastline and Orange Coast College, was issued a “warning on the basis of a comprehensive evaluation.”  A “warning,” the least severe of the four sanctions that ACCJC can give, is issued when an institution has deviated from the Commission’s requirements, standards, or policies.  A college on warning remains fully accredited while it works toward resolution.   The college has posted online the July 3, 2013 letter from the commission and a copy of the Final Version of the External Evaluation Report provided to the College on May 14, 2013. These materials detail the specific issues that led to the warning and the corrections desired by ACCJC. They can be viewed at:

The College did an honorable job on our self-study. Our faculty and staff identified a number of recommendations that would enable the College to improve the quality of our work and strengthen our services to students.   Both the visiting team and the commission affirmed the need for our College to continue our good work and this sanction will now require us to make significant progress in the next two years on our own recommendations. I believe we know the work we have to do and we have the collective willingness to do it. Additionally, the College will collaborate with our sister colleges and the District to address the concerns the commission identified for the District.

Golden West College recognizes the value of peer review accreditation and is committed to working with its sister colleges and the Coast Community College District to fully satisfy and meet the standards of the ACCJC.
