FAQs for Classes Moving Online for 3/20/23 to 3/24/23
- Why are some classes being transitioned to an online format?
Recently, there were two unrelated public safety incidents which occurred on March 6 and March 9 that revealed shortcomings in our safety protocols. As a result, faculty, staff and managers expressed safety concerns and Golden West College’s leadership team is committed to taking steps to address those concerns. Over the next two weeks, GWC’s leadership team and the Coast Community College District will be working to quickly implement several safety measures that have been requested by faculty, staff and managers, including updating phones on campus with a button that connects directly to GWC’s Public Safety Office, placing more security personnel on campus, and establishing an emergency notification protocol to ensure timely notification of campus security threats.
- Am I safe on campus?
Historically Golden West College has been a very safe campus. GWC’s Public Safety Office works closely with the Huntington Beach police department to address campus safety issues that occur. At this time, we have no indication that there is an imminent threat to campus. However, out of an abundance of caution, there will be an increased security presence on campus for the next few weeks, and the College’s Public Safety office will be working closely with HBPD to increase patrols around the perimeter of campus.
- What if I need to meet with a counselor or financial aid staff member?
All student services will be available to students in a virtual format. To get more info about how to connect with a counselor or staff member from student services, visit the Student Services Online Resource website.
- What if I don’t feel safe on campus, and want to complete my coursework online?
Faculty have been asked to accommodate any student who does not feel comfortable attending classes in person this week. To get specific instructions about what you would need to do to complete your coursework remotely, please reach out to your instructor directly.
- Are any facilities on campus open this week for me to study in?
