This session is only for new tenure-track full time faculty hired for 2022-23. This is the first session of the 2022-23 New Faculty Academy. Participants will grab lunch and meet us for a working lunch session to get connected with GWC leadership, prepare for day 1, week 1, and month 1 of teaching.

Grading for Equity

In this presentation, we will look at the basic principles outlined in Joe Feldman's book Grading for Equity:  What It Is, Why It Matters, and How It Can Transform Schools and Classrooms. We will discuss the pros and cons of traditional grading practices, how more equitable practices may lead to more meaningful and accurate final grades, and practical strategies for implementing more equitable grading structures.

Getting to Know Panopto as a Former Knowmia User – What’s Changed?

But Panopto still seems... different? In this session we’ll cover some of the common questions and issues that have been arising for our Knowmia users, as they get started with Panopto. "Butts in Seats" is no Longer Sufficient; Building a Culture of Care in the Classroom in order to Boost Retention and Completion Rates

As we watch enrollment numbers drop to record lows across all 116 California community colleges, we will need to find strategies to attract students to our courses and encourage that they stay until completion. This training explores the way that top-rated professors across the nation build a culture of care and humanity within the confines of their classroom (whether digital or in person). This is where pedagogy meets edutainment and where we can critically reflect on our own best practices in a changing educational atmosphere.

Did you know the Academic Success Center offers writing support and English conversation practice for students in all classes? We do more than Math and English tutoring! In this session, you’ll learn about the various resources available to your students in the Academic Success Center, how you can integrate them into your classes, and why you should. Plus you’ll get to see our beautiful facility and meet our staff and tutors!

Zero-Textbook Cost (ZTC) Courses and the Student Experience
Kristine Clancy and Stephanie Hoon 

GWC students want ZTC courses and their experience with our current offerings has been incredibly positive. This session will look at what GWC students are saying and what that means for instructor course materials. Your campus Open Educational Materials (OER) liaisons will talk about how instructors can pivot their courses to Zero Cost materials by highlighting the incredible growth in available OER materials in their area.

The M365 Multitool: Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive.

A good multitool should always be within reach, quickly solve pesky problems, and contain everything you need without having to enlist any other tools. In this session we will discuss the multi-functionality of the Microsoft M365 Office Suite with a focus on Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive. Learn the basics and some great tips and techniques so you can make the most out of this invaluable tool.
