Study Groups are an informal gathering of students who meet to work on material for a specific class. They can be focused on anything from just doing homework together, to working on instructor-provided study-materials, to practicing study strategies and test-taking techniques, and can alternate among any these activities from week to week (or sometimes include all in one session!).
Attending study groups regularly will help you process the material you’re learning in class, understand and discuss concepts with your peers for the student point of view, be better prepared for each upcoming class, have the confidence to ask questions in class and talk with you instructor, and form habits and communication skills that you will need after you transfer and in your future careers.
New college students will be joined in their study groups early in the semester by the MESA Counselor, MESA Director, STEM Tutor, or continuing MESA students for guidance on how to make sure your study groups are effective.
The MESA Director will organize a schedule for the semester from Week 2 through Week 15 that will include a Study Group or Guided Review Session each week.
You are strongly encouraged to attend every week, but are expected to attend at least 3 each semester (at least one Study Group, at least one Guided Review Session, and a second Study Group or Guided Review Session).
