Being part of a community will make you more likely to succeed in college. Students in a community naturally develop friendships, build meaningful connections with staff and faculty, have a strong support system that will help them through challenging times, receive guidance for academic, personal and professional growth, and feel more connected to the campus as a whole.

Cohorted Classes

For the Spring 2024 semester, MESA recommends the following pairings of classes based on your math class:

Taking your STEM/major-specific classes together with other MESA students will help you develop a strong sense of community and will be very helpful for Study Groups and Guided Review Sessions.

New students will be provided with course and schedule recommendations through MAP or other initial counseling appointments to get you connected with the MESA student community as early as possible.

Continuing students will also be provided with course and schedule recommendations through the MESA Counselor, but are also encouraged to discuss class schedules with each other and see what other classes you might want to take together.

STEM Club(s)

Joining a Club is a great way to enrich your academic experience and meet people with similar interests. For students in the MESA program, the goal of club membership and participation will be to provide opportunities for you to get more hands-on experience in your major, work on projects related to your major that you can highlight in your resume/portfolio/scholarship or internship applications/interviews/etc., develop your leadership skills, develop closer relationships with faculty, and grow your professional network.

We are currently exploring our options of creating a GWC MESA club, or deciding if students prefer to join another similar student organization that serves underrepresented students in mathematics, engineering and the sciences, such as SACNAS (Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science), SWE (Society of Women Engineers), NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers), or SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers), among many others.

Student Study Space

The MESA program has a Student Space in the Student Success Center (SSC) Building, 2nd Floor, Room 2420. It is a space for MESA students to study and do homework, or to just lounge and hang out with each other. Students will have access to Chromebooks and computers, school supplies, GWC campus resources, STEM scholarship and internship information, snacks, and more. We will also often gather here for small workshops and activities, especially with our SSC neighbors, like Counseling, Transfer Center, Career Center and Financial Aid.

The space is generally open to students in the MESA Program from 9:00am-4:00pm, Monday through Friday.

We will also have designated space on certain days and times in the STEM Center and other rooms in the Math/Science Building. The schedule will be shared with MESA students once it is finalized.
