One of the unique things about the MESA program is its emphasis on career exploration, career and leadership skills development, and opportunities to gain experience in your field of interest. Students who regularly participate in MESA activities gain the benefit of "being in the know" and are included in email newsletters of Career and Leadership Development workshops, Job Shadowing and Internship opportunities, STEM Conferences and other networking opportunities.

Career Advising/Exploration

The MESA Counselor and the GWC Career Center are both great resources to help you with career exploration. They can help you with things like If you are thinking about changing your major, if you love your major but aren’t sure what you can do with it, if you want to explore double-majoring or minoring after transfer, and so much more. They will help you determine your interests and skills, and help you explore your options.

The MESA Director and GWC Career Center Coordinator will work closely together to stay updated on opportunities for STEM students and majors, as well as any new career developments in STEM.

Job Shadowing

Even though we may be confident and excited about our major choice, sometimes it can be hard to picture what we will be doing after we graduate and begin our career. Our program is in the process of building relationships with local businesses to arrange opportunities for students to experience a day-in-the-life-of a person who has a job you are interested in or a company you are excited about working for. Our goal is to tailor these opportunities based on the specific interest of our students.

Internship

Internships are a big thing that set students apart from others and makes them more eligible for scholarships, for transfer, and for future career opportunities. And they are a great way to get experience in your field of interest, develop skills, and build networks. We have provided an extensive list of Internships developed specifically for early college students, and are in the process of building relationships with local businesses to offer even more opportunities - please see the Internships & Scholarships <hyperlink> page on the MESA website. We are also working with the GWC Career Center to post STEM internships on the new Handshake app.

Every semester the MESA program will offer workshops on how to find, how to apply for, and how to prepare for internships.

Conferences

Attending Conferences is a truly transformative experience for students. It gives you a chance to see what people are working on in your field, find out what new advancements are happening in your field, connect with others with similar interests and grow your network, exposure to scholarship, internship, and mentoring opportunities, and so much more.

Every MESA student will have the chance to attend one conference while they are part of the program.
