These STEM internship and fellowship programs are key to the recruitment and preparation of the next generation of our nation’s scientific workforce.
The US Department of Homeland Security sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for undergraduate students majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (HS-STEM). The program provides students with quality research experiences at federal research facilities located across the country and allows students the opportunity to establish connections with DHS professionals.

MBARI Summer Internship Program - Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute
The Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute's summer internship program provides an opportunity for talented college students (undergraduate and graduate) and educators to come to MBARI for a period of 10 weeks in 2014 (June 9–August 15) to work on a specific project under MBARI staff supervision. The focus of the MBARI internship is on the intern's professional development—learning research techniques and improving communication and collaboration skills. Each intern will have an MBARI mentor who will supervise a specific project. Interns will also serve as peer-mentors to other interns.

Ocean Science REU- Monterey Bay
California State University, Monterey Bay offers a 10-week REU in the beautiful Monterey Bay Region. Students collaborate with mentors at local host institutions to develop hypothesis-driven projects and receive critical feedback from mentors. Throughout the program, students complete a suite of professional development workshops and training. The summer culminates with our celebratory Summer Research Symposium. Science/ Biology Program - Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
Their ten-week Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP), which begins on the first Monday in June, is designed for approximately 20 outstanding undergraduate freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are interested in pursuing a career in bio medically related sciences. Applicants must have research experience. Students in the program have the opportunity to: obtain hands-on research experience in cutting-edge laboratories, interact with faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students, attend a weekly luncheon/seminar series of presentations by faculty, attend skills development workshops to hone presentation and interview skills, attend and present at works-in-progress sessions with the cohort of SURP students.

Summer Systematics Institute
Participants will conduct research with their chosen advisor on a project relating to the discipline of the advisor and student. Participants also receive instruction while taking part in a museum-based curriculum that includes tours, lectures, and lab exercises on phylogenetic systematics, molecular techniques, biodiversity, evolutionary biology, global change, and other contemporary issues in the natural sciences. One-day field trips highlighting the local natural history include tidepooling and hiking. Participants are also invited to attend a scientific meeting (such as the annual meeting for the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology) following their summer internship to present their findings in the form of a talk or poster.

The TTE Summer Research Program, organized by the Center for Energy Efficient Electronics Science, in partnership with the Center of Integrated Nanomechanical Systems and the Synthetic Biology Engineering Research Center, provides research experience for undergraduates (REU) who are enrolled in community colleges. NIH Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research
Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. Internships cover a minimum of eight weeks, with students generally arriving at the NIH in May or June. The NIH Institutes and the Office of Intramural Training & Education sponsor a wide range of summer activities including lectures featuring distinguished NIH investigators, career/professional development workshops, and Summer Poster Day.

NSF-DoD REU Site: Advanced Technologies for Hypersonic, Propulsive, Energetic, and Reusable Platforms (HYPER) at the University of Central Florida (UCF).
HYPER addresses challenges in aerospace travel and energy production, advancing the fundamental knowledge needed to overcome technical barriers limiting hypersonic flight. The 10-week program will be held this summer from May 21st – July 29th, 2023. Participants will gain hands-on research training in challenges such as: utilizing advanced manufacturing techniques for high-value components, integrating in-site monitoring of stress-strain evolution, developing novel methods for improved internal cooling and heat transfer effectiveness, and mitigating flutter through advanced rotor dynamic control. Many of these challenges rely on approaches that cut across disciplines and research techniques.
Each HYPER REU participant will receive a summer stipend of $6,000, on-campus housing, and a travel allowance to and from Orlando, Florida.

Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies - USC
This NSF-funded REU program will support eight highly motivated and talented undergraduate students to conduct independent but guided research that focuses on Coastal Ocean Systems and Sustainability during an intensive 8-week program at the Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island, CA. The program will provide students with hands-on research experience, training in laboratory and field methodologies (including a 1-day research cruise), introductory lectures and special seminars in oceanography and marine science, academic and career advisement, group activities and field trips to explore different parts of the island and ecosystems.
The Acoustical Society of America (ASA) will be running a 12-week PAID summer undergraduate research program for students interested in the area of Acoustics. This intensive summer program in acoustics is designed for under-represented minority undergraduates from across the country.
This program will emphasize training, mentoring, research, and preparing students for graduate studies & careers in acoustics.
Biophysical Society Summer Course in Biophysics - University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
This 11-week scholarship program hosted by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, introduces undergraduate minority students, disadvantaged students and students with disabilities to the field of biophysics. The program includes lectures, seminars, lab work, team-building activities and field trips. The Summer Research Program is designed to reflect a graduate-level research program. Physics - Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at UCSB
This 9-week Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Summer Research Program for undergraduates. Students will work with faculty and graduate students on a variety of cutting-edge research projects in Physics and Astronomy. The program also aims to provide all-round professional development through weekly activities, and a strong cohort experience through shared housing and social activities.
The Department of Physics at UC Merced will host an NSF REU program for the first time in summer 2023. Projects will span a range of subfields in physics, both experimental and theoretical, including biophysics; condensed matter and solar energy; atomic, molecular, and optical physics and quantum optics; nonlinear dynamics; soft condensed matter; and astrophysics.
Physics and Astronomy Program - UCLA
UCLA's Physics and Astronomy Department offers a research experience program in Physics and Astronomy where undergraduate students work closely with a faculty mentor and their research group on an individual project. All interested students are invited to apply for this 10-week summer program from June 22 - August 29, 2014. Program participants gain direct experience by working in ongoing experimental or theoretical research programs in plasma and beam physics, solid state physics, biophysics, astrophysics, and high-energy physics. All students attend weekly seminars on current research in physics in addition to machine shop and Physics GRE workshops. The experience culminates with the writing of a report and presentation of findings at a closing Symposium.
REU Program in Physics and Astronomy - LSU
They Host a REU program in Physics & Astronomy. The 10-week program introduces students to the nature of research-oriented careers in physics & astronomy, and fosters development of research-related skills and knowledge. Participants are matched with faculty mentors based on student interests. Weekly seminars, field trips and workshops provide students with additional skills development, professional development topics such as ethics and patents/intellectual property, and an introduction to common research resources. Many events occur in conjunction with concurrent LSU summer undergraduate science programs in space science, computational science, and biomedical sciences.
Research Experience for Undergraduates Program - UC Davis Physics Department
The Department of Physics has hosted an NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates site since 2004. During the 10-week program students live on campus while working alongside our faculty and graduate students on ongoing research projects. Students get a view of physics very different from typical coursework. Research Project- Students can choose from several of the physics subfields represented at UC Davis. Each student will have a personalized project, to conclude with a 15-minute presentation to the rest of the REU group.
Clarkson McNair Scholars Program
Clarkson McNair Scholars Program offers a 10-week summer research program with a stipend, plus a room and board package totaling more than $4,000. Other benefits of the McNair Program include workshops designed to explore the graduate school application process, GRE prep classes, graduate school visits, faculty and peer mentoring and opportunities to present your research locally and at national conferences.
